About Me
Carrie Hughes, BA(Hons), MSc, Cert MRCSLT, MASLTIP, HCPC Registered
I qualified from the University of Essex with a Masters degree in Speech & Language Therapy. In 2014 I set up my independent practice, Carrie Hughes Speech and Language Therapy.
I work with clients with a range of needs, but I am particularly interested in my work with children with speech sound disorders, dysfluent speech, social communication needs and Developmental Language Disorders. I have lectured in the latter at the University of Essex, and I enthusiastically follow developments in research in order to keep therapy current and relevant.
Delivering therapy in mainstream schools and Language Units has allowed me to build experience in helping children who struggle with expressive and receptive language, articulation, memory, and attention and listening. Alongside this, my work in Special Needs Schools has developed my ability to help children living with learning disabilities, Autism Spectrum Disorder and challenging behaviours. As well as working with children, I also offer therapy to adolescents and adults with a wide range of language and communication difficulties.
I also make my resources available to other Speech and Language Therapists. Click here to view and download printable Speech and Language games, activities, and much more.
How we work with…
HOW WE WORK WITH ADULTS
In order for us to tailor therapy to you, we take a detailed case history, and explore your strengths and areas of difficulty through discussion, and formal and informal assessments. We can share our findings through verbal feedback, a summary report, or detailed report, depending upon your requirements.
Using evidence-based programmes, our experience and knowledge, therapy will support you in your speech, language and communication skills.
Sessions can take place in your home, online, or in places of education.
We always encourage our clients to complete weekly homework between sessions to consolidate the work done during therapy.
Getting in Touch
We offer weekday appointments, during and after school. Please complete this enquiry form and we will contact you.
HOW WE WORK WITH FAMILIES
Therapy provided by Carrie Hughes Speech and Language Therapy is tailored to your child. Although two children may share a diagnosis, each child’s needs vary. We achieve the best outcomes by considering each child’s strengths, weaknesses, and individuality when planning therapy programmes. Our approach to therapy is creative. We believe this is vital for retaining engagement and motivation, and achieving therapy targets.
To help us build a bespoke therapy programme or offer advice and recommendations, we take a detailed case history, and use formal and informal assessments to determine strengths and areas of difficulty. Our findings can be shared with you through verbal feedback, a summary report, or detailed report, depending upon your requirements.
Using evidence-based programmes, our experience and knowledge, therapy will support your child’s speech, language and communication skills.
Sessions can take place online, in your home, in schools or in nurseries. When we are working in a school on your behalf, we will make sure that you are always kept up to date, explaining what was covered and how sessions went. Depending on your preference, we can communicate by email or a school diary.
We can attend EHCP and review meetings as an independent professional. We liaise with teaching staff and other relevant professionals with your consent.
We always encourage clients and families to complete weekly homework and activities between sessions. This helps to consolidate the work done during therapy.

HOW WE WORK WITH SCHOOLS
Working directly with children
We can provide individual or group therapy for children or young adults with specific needs. We also offer general communication groups. Working consistently with pupils over a period of time enables them to achieve their goals. Programmes can thus be adapted and modified as pupils progress.
We also offer screening services using the WellComm Screen to identify children who may require additional support with their speech, language, or communication skills.
Training and Support for Schools
Our training opportunities for school and nursery staff will empower teams to support students with specific difficulties in the classroom. Such training might include Elklan, Cycles, or Expanding Expressions tools, amongst others.
We support teaching staff when following a speech and language programme.
Review/EHCP
We can attend Review and EHCP meetings, contributing towards these with our recommendations and targets.
Working with other providers
We work closely with NHS Speech and Language Therapists to ensure children receive a consistent approach to therapy. Likewise, we liaise other professionals who work with our clients, including Occupational Therapists, Specialist teachers, and Educational Psychologists. This is a key part of our service to provide a holistic, tailored therapy approach.

About our resources
Carrie Hughes Speech and Language Therapy Resources are designed for SLTs, staff, and families working to support children with speech, language and communication needs. They target a variety of areas, including – but not limited to – speech sounds, language understanding, expressive language and social communication skills.
We liaise with industry experts when creating resources. This ensures that our resources are evidence-based and follow the specific requirements of a given therapy programme.
It is important to us that our products are affordable. We endeavour to continue producing cost-effective, accessible resources to help families, staff, and therapists reach their therapy targets without breaking the bank.
We work closely with a local illustrator, creating bespoke products to target speech, language and communication. We also welcome ideas and requests from therapists for further resources.
Increasingly, we are working with a number of NHS trusts and independent SLT companies. We supply teams with a range of resources to cover their clients’ needs. For further information about Multiple User Licences, please contact us via the enquiry form and we will contact you.
